Many people often confuse the technical terms cake board and cake drum. What is a cake board?

They are perfect for most cakes, cardboard cake boards or used for support under each cake layer, and if you use them carefully when cutting cakes, they can be reused several times.
Standard cardboard cake boards are usually 3mm thick and covered with silver foil, often used to make lighter, smaller cakes - or as extra support between cake layers.
They provide a good base for inserting pins between the cake layers, and are very thin and barely noticeable in your assembled masterpiece.
If you don't use a cake board underneath the cake, then when you move the cake, it can make a big difference and it can crack and ruin your cake. Using the added cardboard cake board to move the cake is also easier and cleaner.
What is a cake drum?
Cake drums are usually a layer of foil-covered cards or card foam boards (like cake boards, you can make them in other colors, but silver is the most common), and they are about 12-13 mm /½ in thick.
They are strong and usually larger than a cake board. Just like cake boards, they can be reused as long as you take care of them properly.
What's the use of a cake drum board?
The drumsticks are much thicker than standard cake boards and are made of thick cardboard, usually about 12mm thick. Drumsticks are great for heavier cakes such as large sponge cakes, fruit cakes and tiered wedding cakes.
These are thicker cake plates and are usually used for extremely heavy cakes.
Use a cake drum at the bottom to hold the weight of the cake.
Cake drums are ideal for decorating cake boards because cake drums are thicker than cake boards and are decorated with fudge or touch paper and ribbons to complete the look.
So which one should you use?
When it comes to choosing the right cake board, the main difference between the two is their thickness.
Cake drum are the thickest structural support option, while standard cake boards are a cost-friendly option.
A cake drum of about 12mm/½" is great for adding ribbon around for some extra decoration.
The cake board is very thin, and the cake drum is generally used for the bottom of the cake, which can place heavy cakes.
Cake drums are traditionally used for wedding cakes, but with the option to add ribbons, make your cake more sophisticated and eye-catching. Hence becoming more and more popular among all cakes.
While cake boards aren't outdated, they're usually less expensive when they're used to stack the layers of a cake because the thin, stiff boards are easy to cover but provide plenty of support for the cake.
